New Music Worth a Spin

Electric Skychurch

I am new to Electric Skychurch, although they have been around quite a while. The band is an electronic or acid trance group based in Los Angeles, California. It was formed in 1991 by composer and producer James Lumb, who initially involved vocalist Roxanne Morganstern and percussionist Alex Spurkel in the project. The “I Love Bob” remix on Endless Horizon was on the Moog Original film soundtrack and features a catchy vocal hook with a chilled dirty beat. Nice for road trips. http://www.skychurch.com/

MartyParty

MartyParty (website) has been killing it on his own, after a successful partnership with Ooah from The Glitch Mob to form PantyRaid. Dubstep is finally starting to feel a little played out, but Marty manages to break the mold and push the envelope with more melodic and intricate production than his British counterparts Here Marty is putting on the red light with this ill remix of the classic Police track…

Beats Antique

Beats Antique have a new track out that I’m digging. There are infusions of Middle Eastern belly dance music, down tempo, hip-hop, old school jazz, afro-beat, and many styles of electronic music. Burner favorites that always get the dance floor moving. Upcoming shows and more info at their website: http://beatsantique.com/

Gramatik

Gramatik recently released “Street Bangerz Volume 3″ and it does not disappoint. As with his earlier releases, tracks from this album have been holding down many of the Top 10 spots on the Beatport charts. Chopping up all those old funk, soul, blues and jazz tracks and making something completely new is his love and he does it like no other. Check it: http://www.myspace.com/gramatik

And off Volume 2, this is one of my favorite tracks:

MP3: Gramatik – Just Jammin

Aloe Blacc

I’ve never seen the HBO show “How to Make It in America,” but this song is apparently the opener. If you’ve seen the show, you are probably familiar with and maybe tired of this song by now. But I”m digging it and this is my first introduction to Aloe Blacc. Stones Throw Records is always pushing the envelope and mixing the soulful with the modern.

MP3: Aloe Blacc – I Need a Dollar

Sean Hayes

I remember seeing the name Sean Hayes on the old Mark Farina track “Dream Machine,” which was a remix of Haye’s track “Rattlesnake Charm.” I never followed up to hear more of his original music, which has been my loss. His full length release Run Wolves Run, has some amazing music on it as does Flowering Spade. His voice is subtle yet powerful with a storytelling delivery and rich imagery. The track below is magic. Get into Sean Hayes here: http://www.seanhayesmusic.com/2010/

The Roots

The Roots recently released another solid album and this track is blazing hot. Joanna Newsom has an impressive discog, but the Roots have no doubt introduced many music heads to her amazing vocals. This track is good in so many ways…

MP3: The Roots – Right On

Broken Bells

Broken Bells is artist-producer Brian Burton (better known as Danger Mouse) and James Mercer, the lead vocalist and guitarist for the Albuquerque indie rock band The Shins. I love Mercer’s voice and think the Mouse did a nice job with production. Before the formation of Broken Bells, Mercer and Burton both worked together on the track “Insane Lullaby” on the album Dark Night Of the Soul by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse. Broken Bells have since performed the song several times, often as a tribute to the late Mark Linkous, the Sparklehorse frontman who died in early 2010. Solid album all the way through…

LCD Soundsystem – This is Happening

I hated the first single off LCD Soundsystem’s new album. “Drunk Girls” is an annoying track that left me completely lacking in curiosity about the the rest of the album. I wouldn’t put it past James Murphy to have done that intentionally… cheeky little devil that he is. But upon listening to the rest of the album, This is Happening, I fell in love with LCD all over again. This is a powerful follow up to their groundbreaking “Sound of Silver” and will probably receive similar respect. I skipped Coachella this year, so missed their performance on the polo field. Anyway, here are a few of the standout tracks from the album. Some really creative and beautiful cuts.

Heyoka – Liquid Wobble Bass Warmth

I am surprised it took this long for me to find Heyoka. Dubstep can be too dark and aggressive for my tastes, but artists like Heyoka, Bluetech and others are hitting the sweet spot with music that is head knodding, atmospheric/psychedelic and danceable at the same time. The mixture of dub, hip hop and bass wobble over intricate dreamscapes is intoxicating to both the body and mind. Get some.

Heyoka AKA Andrei Olenev is a cosmic auditory scientist found in the Bay Area noosphere, who has been blowing minds with his sonic manipulations.
Muti Music first released Heyoka’s “Space Case EP” in 2008 and included him on their growing roster of talented artists. His albums ‘Whomp Gland & Pineal Dub’, ‘Gate Code’ and the all new ‘Marklar’ album in 2010 have shown that he is a producer consistently evolving his musical style while managing to maintain a signature sound that is distinctively ‘Heyoka’.

His early influences in Downtempo, Dub and IDM combined with midtempo dancefloor genres have helped create a very unique sound that combines relentless basslines, hip hop rhythms, dub vibes, and musicality and melody, all within an atmosphere of heavy psychedelia and alien dimensions. The response to his emergence so far has been overwhelming with Heyoka developing audiences and playing festivals from US to Canada and Australia. For a mind bending experience in dub inspired Glitch Hop, keep your ear to the ground (website) for Heyoka playing a city or festival near you.
