Flobots Fight with Tools

Denver-based Flobots create a unique sound by fusing crafty and politically-inspired hip hop flows over alt-rock infused breakbeats.  Add a touch of strings and trumpet and you have a full and funky sound that will keep your head nodding and mind contemplating.

The Flobots have received quite a bit of attention with their single “Handlebars,” including over 14 million hits to their YouTube video and reaching #3 on the Modern Rock charts in the U.S.  And it is encouraging to see such a socially conscious band reach into the mainstream.  Their sound is truly genre-bending, but is reminiscent of the flows of Sweatshop Union, with a bit of the band/mc interaction of BLVD. Musical comparisons and genre classifications aside, the Flobots are an extremely talented breath of fresh air on the music scene with a positive message to bring to their fans. A sampling of lyrics from the track “Same Thing” include:

we need money for healthcare and public welfare
free mumia and Leonard Peltier
human needs not corporate greed
drop the debt and legalize weed

we say yes to grassroots organization
no to neoliberal globalization
bring the troops back to the USA
and shut down guantanamo Bay

They start a U.K. tour in February and are rumored to be releasing a new album in 2009.  Check out the Flobots website for tour dates and more information.  Below are a few mp3s and their video for “Handlebars.”
